Turbulence Models Foundations Of Fluid Mechanics Ii Handout Docsity This document provides an overview of turbulence modeling in computational fluid dynamics (cfd). it discusses: 1) the phenomenon of turbulence and the limitations of directly simulating turbulence at high reynolds numbers due to computational constraints. • the main task of turbulence modeling is to develop computational procedures of sufficient accuracy and generality for engineers to be able to accurately predict the reynolds stresses and the scalar transport terms. Most of the turbulence models (rans and les) are developed based on single phase flows. the effect of turbulence on the interface and the interface induced turbulence are not considered. These notes begin with a simple discussion of turbulence and move on to the formal statistical analyses that are used in turbulence. we will see that the formal statistical analysis leads to a closure problem that requires additional assumptions to model physical processes.

The objective of turbulence modeling is to develop equations that will predict the time averaged velocity, pressure, and temperature fields without calculating the complete turbulent flow pattern as a function of time. Computational fluid dynamics (cfd) is a numerical method used to analyze and solve fluid flow problems. cfd uses the mathematical equations that govern fluid motion and heat transfer to simulate the behavior of fluids.
