The third sunday in ordinary time is the sunday of the word of god, instituted by pope francis in 2019. Jesus began his preaching saying “the time … is at hand.” this “time” is kairos: the definitive time, not a season of the liturgical year or a lunar month, but the time of fulfillment. In matthew’s gospel this takes place immediately after jesus returns from fasting in the desert for forty days and forty nights and being tempted by the devil. this is, then, the very beginning of his ministry, when he first sets out to proclaim the good news: “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (v.17). This third sunday of the liturgical year is marked all over the catholic world as the sunday of the word of god. this was instituted by pope francis in his apostolic letter, motu proprio, *aperuit illis* , which was promulgated on 30th september, 2019.
